Following the successful launch of the Orange Button scheme in October 2022, over 1,000 people across the county have completed the training and signed up to become Orange Button holders. We have been overwhelmed by people’s support and would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone for their involvement so far 🧡
The Orange Button scheme is a key support network for people experiencing suicidal thoughts across Somerset or for those worried about someone they know. The 🟠 button/pin is a visible symbol identifying people within the community who have completed quality-assured mental health or suicide prevention training. We are encouraging residents across the county to ‘push the button’ if they are, or someone they know is, having suicidal thoughts. They can do this by approaching an Orange Button wearer and asking them for information and support.
As part of the second phase of promoting the scheme, we are calling on businesses across the county to put staff forward to undertake the training. This will increase the network and build recognition of the Orange Button itself. Please let us know if your organisation would be interested in supporting us.
We have created an Orange Button ‘Toolkit’, which we hope you will read through and support by sharing the content we have created.
The toolkit includes:
🧡How to be an Orange Button ambassador (if you are already an Orange Button holder, we ask you to share a photo of yourself wearing your Orange Button and a quote on social media. Of course, only if you feel comfortable doing so.
🧡Links to six films on YouTube we created to explain the scheme and how to get involved.
🧡Links to six short films that are for use on your social channels.
🧡Campaign posters that can be shared digitally or printed and displayed in your workplaces / local communities.
🧡Social media graphics and content that we would love for you to post on your social media channels to raise awareness of the scheme and how to get involved.
🧡Digital screen graphics.
🧡Email signatures.
It is a common myth that talking about suicide encourages people to think about it. However, research has shown the opposite. We want everyone to know that it’s safe to talk about suicide, and it’s ok to say if you’re not ok.
We hope you will continue supporting the Orange Button scheme by sharing it with your colleagues, communities, friends and families.🧡
