Self-help tips for good mental health in 2025
Embrace Small, Kind Goals
People sometimes feel that in the opening weeks and months of a new year, they should set lofty goals or resolutions. But this can often feel overwhelming. Instead, focus on small, achievable aims that prioritise self-care and connection.
“If you want to set goals, make them gentle and manageable,” an Open Mental Health volunteer suggests. “For example, you might decide to take a short walk each day, meet a friend for coffee, or try out a new wellbeing group.”
Set Boundaries and Protect Your Time
Make clear agreements with friends and family about what works for you. It’s okay to say no to events or commitments that feel stressful. By setting boundaries, you create space for yourself to take care of your needs.
Plan Some Quiet Time to Recharge
Allow yourself time to rest and recharge. Scheduling regular “me time” helps you stay balanced and avoid burnout.
Connect with Supportive People
Spend time with people who make you feel good; avoid those who create stress. Whether it’s a trusted friend, family member, or a group setting, building positive connections can boost your mental health.
Cut Back on the Scrolling
Limit the time you spend scrolling through social media, especially if it causes you to compare yourself to others or feel unhappy. Setting boundaries for social media use can help you focus on doing things you actually enjoy.
Try the Five Ways to Wellbeing
Have you thought of practising the Five Ways to Wellbeing and making them a part of your life?
- Connect with others.
- Be active in ways that work for you.
- Take notice of the world around you.
- Keep learning something new.
- Give kindness and support to others.
These simple actions can help improve your mental health and overall sense of wellbeing.
Explore Peer Workshops at WATCH
Why not try a peer workshop at WATCH? Offering supportive, inclusive spaces where you can learn from others and share your own experiences, peer workshops are a great way to build confidence and connection.
Bring Your Lived Experience to Open Mental Health
If you’ve experienced mental health challenges, you could use your insights to make a difference. Open Mental Health is looking for Expert by Experience Leaders to shape the future of mental health support in Somerset. Your voice could help create meaningful change for others in 2025.

NHS Talking Therapies
Help for anxiety and depression
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust’s Talking Therapies service offers many different short term, time-limited treatments for anxiety and depression. These treatments are available both individually and in groups, by telephone and video for your greater convenience, and in person at venues too.
The service can also support you to cope better if you have experienced a traumatic event, or if you are struggling to live with a long term physical health condition such as diabetes, heart failure or breathing difficulties.
Visit the website and use the self-referral links on the page to access assessment and support. You’ll be offered a prompt assessment session with an experienced clinician, usually on the phone, to look at what’s troubling you and how the service can offer the most effective support.
