SASP Suicide Prevention Project
Our partner SASP runs a Suicide Prevention Projec to support young adults aged 16-25 in Somerset who are or have been at risk of self-harm and suicide. They provide a safe, supportive space where you can talk openly about your feelings, connect with others, and explore new ways to manage your mental health.
Suicide Prevention
Wellbeing Mentors
We will support you with a wellbeing mentor who can:
- Help you express what you’re feeling and experiencing
- Introduce you to ideas and approaches that others have found helpful
- Reassure you that you are not alone in how you feel
- Support you in building social connections and a sense of belonging
- Encourage you to recognise your strengths and self-worth
- Boost your self-esteem and confidence
- Guide you toward feeling more hopeful about the future
Our wellbeing mentors have personal experiences of mental health challenges and use their own journeys to offer support, guidance, and reassurance. Through sport and physical activity, we support you to improve your mental well-being, strengthen social connections, and develop confidence in a way that feels engaging and empowering.
Through funding from Rethink and the Open Mental Health Alliance, we are carrying out targeted work around suicide prevention. Over the past two years, our We’ve Got This project highlighted the critical need for more support for young people in crisis. We are committed to bridging these gaps and ensuring that those at risk receive the help they need when they need it most.
What Our Support Looks Like
We offer 1-2-1 wellbeing mentor support for young adults aged 16-25 in Somerset who are at risk of self-harm or suicide.
1-2-1 Wellbeing Mentor Support
Our wellbeing mentors provide individual support for a number of sessions, in the community wherever feels most comfortable for you. These sessions are designed to help you talk openly about your feelings, build confidence, and explore new ways to manage your mental health.
What Our Wellbeing Mentors Are:
Experts by Experience – Our wellbeing mentors have faced their own mental health challenges and use their lived experiences to offer support, reassurance, and guidance. They help you feel better about yourself, recognise your self-worth, and build confidence in a way that works for you.
- Connectors – We will help you find and access community groups, particularly those focused on sport and physical activity, and support you until you feel confident attending on your own.
- Advocates – We will help you find your voice, represent your needs, and support you in accessing the right resources and services.
What Our Wellbeing Mentors Are Not:
Counsellors – While we can signpost you to great counselling services, our wellbeing mentors are not trained counsellors.
- Therapists – Our mentors provide support based on lived experience, not clinical therapy. If you or someone you are nominating requires therapeutic intervention, this may not be the right service.
- Unlimited Support – Our goal is to empower you with the tools and confidence to manage your mental health and everyday challenges, rather than provide long-term ongoing support.
- A Substitute for Social Care – We work closely with social care services but offer a different kind of support. Our focus is on peer-led guidance and connection through sport and activity.
