Every year, World Mental Health Day gives us all a chance to pause and think about our wellbeing. This year, the global focus is on recognising that mental health is affected by the disasters, wars and catastrophes that strike nations, and it’s affected by seeing them on TV, too, and by the individual sorrows that come into our lives.
Everyone deserves access to quality care and support, and here in Somerset, we’re working hard to make sure that’s a reality.
So many things can affect our minds—from anxiety and depression to stress and trauma—and this means that support needs to be just as varied. That’s exactly why Open Mental Health exists: to simplify your search for help and make sure you never have to ask, “Where do I start?”
You Don't Have to Suffer in Silence
When you’re struggling, knowing where to turn can be the hardest part. You might feel overwhelmed, or think that your only options are waiting for an urgent doctor’s appointment or going to a busy Accident & Emergency department.
We want you to know there’s a better, calmer first step:
Mindline Somerset: If you just need a friendly voice any time of the day or night, our confidential telephone service, Mindline Somerset, is there for you. You can call 24/7 for a chat, advice, or simply a chance to talk through what you’re feeling, on 01823 276892 or freephone 0800 138 1692.
Crisis Safe Space: When things feel immediately overwhelming, don’t endure it alone. You can arrange a one-to-one session with a member of our Crisis Safe Space team. They’re ready to listen and help you through moments of distress, offering supportive sessions either face-to-face, by phone, or virtually. To arrange an appointment, just ring the Mindline number above or book a session on our website.

Support That Fits with You and Your Life
Mental health support shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. Our partnership of local organisations and the NHS means we can offer specialised support that genuinely understands you and your circumstances:
Learning and Connection: Sometimes, simply knowing you’re not alone is the most powerful therapy. Our peer support services connect you with people who have lived experience, offering solidarity and hope built on mutual understanding and respect.
Targeted Help: We recognise that different groups face unique challenges. We have specific resources available for men’s mental health, dedicated help for senior support through Age UK Somerset, and specialist services for caregivers who need time and space for themselves. We also provide focused support for suicide prevention for young adults.
Practical Life Support: Remember that mental stress often stems from practical worries. Our partners at Citizens Advice Somerset are part of the alliance and can provide expert, free advice on issues like benefits, debt, and housing, tackling problems at their root.
